Demi Lovato Wishes She'd Kept Relationship with Joe Jonas a Secret

Silence is golden: That's one lesson Demi Lovato has taken away from her brief high-profile romance with Joe Jonas.



After going through a very public breakup last spring, Lovato now says she wishes she'd kept her relationship with her Camp Rock 2 costar quiet.

"I learned my lesson," Lovato, 17, tells PEOPLE. "It's not very much fun when you break up in a public relationship. So, maybe next time keep a secret."

Though the Jonas Brothers member has been portrayed as a heartbreaker, following his split from other young stars like Taylor Swift, Lovato defends him.

"I know that he has the best intentions," she says. "Definitely most guys don't have the same intentions that he does."

'Want to Shout from Rooftops'

Still, Lovato admits it was tough to keep her feelings to herself once she started dating Jonas, 21, after they finished filming Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam. (It premieres on the Disney Channel Sept. 3 and airs through the Labor Day weekend.)

"You want to say to your fans, 'Guess what, I'm so in love with somebody.' You want to shout it from the rooftops. That's what you do when you fall in love," she says. "At the same time, I learned my lesson. You know, I'll go public when I marry someone one day."

While Jonas has been spotted out with Twilight star Ashley Greene – he declined to comment on whether or not they're dating – Lovato says she isn't in a rush to start a new love connection. "No new romances. I'm perfectly happy with being single. I feel like also if I was going to have a new romance, I'd keep it private," she says.

In the meantime, Lovato is touring with the Jonas Brothers and members of the Camp Rock 2 cast – and she and Jonas are back to being friends. "Working with [Joe] has been fine," she adds. "It's been really great."

Demi and the Jonas Brothers are back together in preparation for their tour and they did a bunch of interviews this morning. Surpirsingly, not as awkward as I thought they would be.

A run-in with the ex can be a nightmare at the best of times, but most of us don't have to do it on live TV .


Joe Jonas only narrowly avoided an awkward moment with his ex Demi Lovato on the red carpet in Hollywood last night.


The pair knew they would be attending the VH1 Do Something awards together for months in advance but after they split in May the evening was set to be fraught with tension.

A grim-faced Demi, 17, did what any woman would and pulled out all the stops with a slinky designer dress, glitzy Louboutin shoes and freshly highlighted hair.


But Joe, 20, who is part of mega-hit band the Jonas Brothers, wasn't there to see his former love's efforts.


Joe only arrived to meet the press after Demi had finished walking the carpet, ensuring the pair would never have to meet, at least in public anyway


During the show, both Demi and Joe separately took to the stage to present awards, so at least Joe got to admire Demi's glamorous outfit at that point.


The duo had better be friends quick though, as they are commited to touring together starting next week.

The pair, who went public with their relationship in March, first met on the set of Disney's Camp Rock in 2007. The following year, Demi went on tour with the Jonas Brothers.

When this year's new tour was announced, Demi told People.com: 'I'm fortunate that I get to work with the person that I'm in the relationship with, rather than being across the country and texting him, I can have him hold my hand when I'm tired.'

But that hand-holding was not to happen, because in May the couple split, with Joe telling People.com: 'I realise over the time we have shared together that I feel I care more about our friendship right now. It was my choice to break up but I love her as a friend. She's been there for me when I needed her. I will continue to be her friend and be there for her.'


Joe added, 'Demi and I knew going into our romantic relationship that it may not be an easy one.'

With a huge teen following, the break-up made for hot gossip and Demi took to Twitter to silence speculation, writing: 'There are so many crazy rumors flying around today. I'd like to clear a few things up. First, Joe and I did split but it wasn't over the phone. Things didn't work out but we'll remain friends. Secondly, I am NOT dating anybody already. Nothing is more important to me than the relationship I have with my fans. Just thought you guys should know this.
Joe famously wears a purity ring. He told Details magazine in 2008 that the rings, also worn by both brothers at the time, were ‘promises to ourselves and to God that we’ll stay pure till marriage.’

Joe has also dated singer Taylor Swift, 20 and actress Camille Bell, 23.

The tweet comes after Demi chatted with Access Hollywood's Billy Bush, who asked of Joe, "Oh? So you're dating him now?"

In response, a smitten Miss Lovato replied, "Umm, yeah he is my best friend and he is incredible.”

Aside from the romantic situation, Demi kept busy on Saturday with musical duties, as she tweeted to her fans and followers, "Now off to a writing session with the beautiful and talented Kara Dioguardi!"

Demi Lovato Confirms She's Dating Joe Jonas

It's like the happy ending to a Disney movie: A smitten-sounding Demi Lovato revealed Friday that she is indeed dating Joe Jonas.

During an interview with Access Hollywood's Billy Bush on his radio program, The Billy Bush Show, the host asked Lovato if she'd ever dated any of the Jonas Brothers, "Umm, maybe," she said coyly.

"Which one? Joe?" asked Bush, to which Lovato said, "Yeah. He's actually… he's my best friend."

Pressing for clarification, Bush said, "So you guys went from boyfriend-girlfriend to best friends?"

"No kind of the opposite," the 17-year-old Sonny with a Chance star explained.

"Oh? So you're dating him now?" asked Bush.

"Umm, yeah he is my best friend and he is incredible," Lovato finally confessed.

Lovato described her Camp Rock 2 costar as a "complete gentleman," who "treats me to the most amazing places."

She added, "He's perfect."

Lovato first met Jonas, 20, on the set of Camp Rock in 2007 and toured with the Jonas Brothers the following year. The pair have long been rumored to be a couple, which Lovato had previously denied. The pair recently filmed a video for their duet "Make A Wave."

On Joe being amazing: “Yea, he’s my best friend. He’s always been my best friend, always will be…he’s amazing. I have several best friends, but he’s just…amazing.”
